Zyliss' Cook-n-Serve tongs have several standout features that make them different from almost every other kind of cooking tongs: 1) lock and unlock with your thumb in normal operating position. Most other tongs have the lock at the butt end as part of the hanging loop. This makes locking and unlocking a two handed operation. With the Zyliss - it's an effortless one handed operation. 2) The arms of the tongs curve inwards towards the tips aggressively - creating a cradle of space between the tips and the body of the arms. The allows you to pick up larger pieces of food, or bigger bunches of small items, like great wads of pasta. 3) The tips are silicone - with much better heat tolerance than nylon - which melts at common pan temperatures. Silicon isn't rigid, however, so most silicon tipped tongs are thick and have a clumsy feel. The Zyliss tongs are better than most because they use a thin coating of silicon over well shaped pointed metal tips - plus they have some molded in nubs which grip food. The pointed tips allow you to better handle small items. All in all, these are my second favorite kitchen tongs behind the Oxo Good Grips nylon tipped ones (because the Good Grips ones have better feel and better fine control) although I don't like the Oxo's traditional butt mounted locking mechanism. The Zyliss tongs handle larger items better, however, and are more useful in a wider range of circumstances because of their shape and more heat tolerance silicon tips. Zyliss tongs' overall design is more modern and cutting edge. These are extremely good kitchen tongs - you will not be disappointed.

I purchased these tongs based on the previous five-star reviews, and I have not been disappointed. I really didn't need them, but I have been converting all of my kitchen gadgets to silicone, whenever possible. I have some new enameled cast-iron pans, and I won't have to worry about scratching them with these. The color is not a true-black, would have preferred red but they weren't offered in that color. This shade is sort of a two-tone grayish black and olive green. It is an unusual shade, but I can live with it. These really are good quality, and have a mighty solid grip. I can even pick up all the nut shells and skins I've been dropping without dragging out the vacuum. These tongs were pricey, I paid $20+, but color me happy.

They guillotine the tips of your fingers when closing. Take a close look at the design; now compare it to old-school tongs. The zyliss tongs close like scissors. Imagine your finger tips caught in the 'blades.'
My other kitchen tongs close like tweezers - there is always airspace between the 2 tongs.
I would not allow children to use these.
UPDATE:
I contacted Zyliss (1/2011). These tongs were redesigned 5 years ago to fix the pinching problem. Zyliss sent a free replacement within the week of the redesigned tongs.
It is not possible to pinch your fingers with the new design. The Image shown on Amazon is the OLD design
They are excellent for handling hot delicate items - they work just like hands.
